One of the technologies unveiled at Gitex Technology Week 2015 might be making the use of NOL cards obsolete in the not-too-distant future. RTA Dubai has expressed their intention to introduce smart wrist watches enabled with NFC technology. The smartwatches were one of many innovations displayed at Gitex – consumer computer and electronics trade show, exhibition and conference held in Dubai every year.
According to Khalid Al Awadhi, Director of Automated Fare Collection at RTA, the devices have received the go-ahead from the RTA technical team and their next step is to undertake a survey to gain insights into commuter’s feedback on the device usage, price range and design choices. RTA plans to offer a range of choices that will appeal to different demographical segments. Users will simply hold their smartwatch to the reader in the same way they currently use NOL cards.
The company behind the NFC enabled smart watches is Watch2Pay. Led by inventor and owner Lucas Alexander Karl Scheybal, Watch2Pay is pioneer in the development of contactless watches enabled with card payment features. The system in the smart watch acts as a MasterCard PayPass card which essentially means that a transaction can be made by the watch at all outlets where MasterCard PayPass is accepted.
The benefit of this technology will be ease of use and convenience, as users will be able to employ the NFC-enabled watches for metro, bus and taxi fares and also for shopping, thanks to credit card functionality installed in the smartwatch.
